Bhubaneswar: On Wednesday evening Bhubanewar City Police Commissioner YB Khurania issued a look out notice against Manoj Nayak and his wife Saswati Das, the trustees of the SUM Hospital where 21 patients died in a major fire mishap. Around 3:30 am early Thursday morning one of the main trustees Manoj Nayak surrendered at the Khandagiri police station. Succumbing to media pressure the state government was compelled to act and the prompt action taken by the police led to the surrender of Nayak.
Earlier in the day Director General of Police (DGP) KB Singh informed to the mediapersons that the Joint Director of the Enforcement Directorate, Bhubaneswar had written a letter to investigate Nayak’s financial transactions for which a look out notice was issued against Nayak.
Later in the day talking to media persons Bhubaneswar Police Commissioner YB Khurania informed that police has registered case under Sections 304, 308, 285 and 34 of the IPC against Nayak. He added “Police is interrogating Manoj Nayak after his arrest. We will record the statements of all the trustees of the hospital soon.” It may be pointed out that the Saswati Das wife of Manoj Nayak who happens to be another trustee is still absconding.
According to Khurania, the Bhubaneswar police is still ascertaining the structure of the organisation in order to find out the role and involvement of others in the hospital management. He also added that documents seized will help them interrogate Nayak regarding the funding of all Shiksha O’ Anusandhan (SOA) Charitable Trust controlled institutions. Commissioner Khurania also informed that investigation is at a preliminary stage and till now 5 arrests have been made in this connection but the numbers may increase as the investigation proceeds further.
