Odisha Franchise Team in Hockey India League Likely

Bhubaneswar: Keeping an eye on the talent and potential of budding hockey players in the State, Hockey India League has proposed franchise for Odisha. A meeting in this regard was chaired by the Odisha Chief Secretary along with a team of Officers of Hockey India League led by General Secretary Dr. Narendra Batra. Dr. Batra made a presentation on opportunities involved in franchise and potentiality of Odisha in flourishing of Hockey. It also highlighted the State’s rich history of Hockey and the pool of talent which Odisha has produced like Ignes Tirkey, Dillip Tirkey, Lazrus Barla, Michel Kindo and 15 other known players in recent years.

The presentation citing Odisha ranked among top 3 growing States of the country stated that it has imagery Icons for youths to emulate in the fields of Hockey and many other socio-cultural matters. The team also informed that the Franchise in the League will promote sports at grass root level. It will increase community visibility and will also be helpful for propagation of various potentialities of Odisha both at national and international levels. The league will focus on talent scouting in sports particularly hockey. The franchise is said to enhance city image on an international scale as many international sports events will be held here and State will be a part of the global league. The cost involvement in the franchise for 2014 and 2015 is estimated around Rs. 6 crore which will also generate assured revenue of more than Rs.3 Crore, said Batra. Besides, the League will provide a broad platform for propagation of art, culture, industrial, tourism and other opportunities at national and international levels utilizing built legendary status & myths of our State.

The proposal for possibility of holding the franchise through a SPV in partnership among IDCO, OMC and PSUs was discussed in the meeting. Chief Secretary Mohapatra has advised Development Commissioner to examine the proposal from the view point of brand building for Odisha and suggest definite proposal about its feasibility.
