Bhubaneswar: Lalatendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra the firebrand Congress leader of Odisha also popularly known as Lulu Mohapatra breathed his last at 10.14 pm on Sunday night after a brief illness while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Gurgaon. He was 52.
As the news of his untimely death broke condolences for Mohapatra poured in from all political circles. Governor SC Jamir, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Speaker Nirankan Pujari expressed their condolences.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after visiting the hospital paid his homage to Mohapatra and tweeted, “His passing away is a huge loss for Odisha political arena besides being a personal loss;my heartfelt condolences to the family”. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi expressing his condolence through the twitter account said, “Saddened by the untimely demise of sr Congress leader from Odisha Shri Lalatendu Mohapatra.My heartfelt condolences to his fmly &loved ones”.
Odisha State leader of opposition and veteran Congress leader Narasing Mishra, BJP State president Basant Panda, AICC general secretary in-charge of Odisha Congress BK Hariprasad, PCC president Prasad Harichandana also expressed their grief for the departed soul. Other Congress leaders Jayadev Jena, Bhakta Charan Das, Srikant Jena, Pradeep Majhi, Hemananda Biswal also expressed profound grief.
Lulu Mohapatra rose to fame as a student leader at the Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar College in Bhubaneswar. His closeness with the former Chief Minister of Odisha JB Patnaik brought him to limelight and he successfully contested Odisha Legislative Assembly (OLA) and was an MLA from Brahmagiri in Puri district in the year 1995, 2000 and 2004.
Mohapatra was Student Congress State president and Youth Congress State president. He was working president of the PCC from 2009 to 2014.
The body of Mohapatra is likely to be brought to Bhubaneswar on Monday evening and later taken to his his native village in Puri district where the last rites will be performed.
