Bhubaneswar: The Chief Minister’s ire came too late but did it send the right signal to the people of Odisha? Going by perception of the citizens it seems more like the CM wanted to silence the voice of dissent in a democracy against the corrupt. The Chief Minister of Odisha has a long standing history of his no-nonsense position against corruption. Yet, the timing of his crack down on dissenting voice against the corrupt raises eyebrows in some quarters of the intellectual class.
At a time when the State stares at drought plagued with acute shortage of potable water in the western parts with over 45 deaths officially declared due to heat wave conditions does not go down well to the masses, when chit fund controversy again hits back at the government.
While the opposition BJP and the Congress are hell-bent to rake up the issue at all levels the upcoming Panchayat elections will be interesting to watch say political commentators. Moreover, the strong presence of media and the pro-active social media will no doubt make a dent to the ruling BJD’s ambitions at the Panchayat level unless prompt action is taken against the real wrongdoers.
