Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief minister has initiated a signature campaign demanding a special status for the State and also for allocation of more funds. It comes after the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) called for a state-wide ‘hartal’/protests on April 26, which was targeted against the UPA government at the centre, alleging discriminatory treatment towards Odisha.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik spearheading the signature campaign here in Bhubaeswar said that the campaign for special category status for the State has started and it is expected to get one crore signatures which would be sent to the President of India. A large number of people including ministers, MLAs, party workers and citizens of the State are participating in the campaign.
Notably, Odisha’s demand for a special category status has been made by the ruling dispensation for the last few years. But political observers feel keeping in view of the elections coming up in a year the State government is stepping up the demand to woo voters.
