Bhubaneswar: In a major mishap around 20 people lost their lives and several others were injured when a private bus carrying passengers plunged 50 feet below off Manitri Bridge in Angul district here on Friday morning. Preliminary reports suggest that the injured were immediately rushed to local hospitals at Athmallik and Angul for emergency treatment. The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.
According to DG Police K B Singh, the mishap took place near Deulijhari when the bus coming from Boudh to Athamallik fell from a bridge at Puruna Manitri. Around 16 persons, including four women, were killed, 30 others sustained serious injuries in the accident, Singh added.
According to sources, a helicopter has been sent to Angul to shift eight critically injured passengers to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. The death toll is likely to increase as the injured are being treated at various near by hospitals.
Expressing deep condolence over the accident Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has directed the local administration to take necessary steps. The District Collector of Angul and Superintendent of Police supervised the rescue operation. CM Patnaik has said the State Government would bear all expenses for treatment of the injured. He has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs each to the kin of the passengers who died in the accident.
