Bhubaneswar: Barendrakrushna Dhal, a noted journalist, columnist and literary figure of Odisha passed away on Tuesday morning at his residence here in Bhubaneswar. He was 77.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan were among many notable personalities to have expressed deep grief over demise of Dhal.
Journalists, politicians and people, after the news of his demise broke, reached his residence to offer their tributes to the departed soul.
Dhal’s journalistic career spreads for over 4 decades as he worked for state and national level newspapers. At one time he was the Editor of Swarajya. He was also the Odisha correspondent for leading Bengali daily Aaj Kaal for many years. He continued as columnist of leading newspapers of the State till be breathed his last. Dhal was also a writer who penned many novels in Odia language.
He also actively worked for the cause of media persons and was president of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ). He will also be remembered for establishing the Bhubaneswar Book Fair which he started in early 1980s.
Family sources informed that Dhal’s last rites will be performed on Wednesday at Puri Swarga Dwar.
