Bhubaneswar: Normal life took a hit in Odisha here on Friday after a dawn-to-dusk Bharat Bandh was called by 10 Trade Unions including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, UTUC and LPF. Activists belonging to different trade unions were seen blocking roads, picketing and halting trains at various places across the State.
Transportation came to a standstill as buses, trucks and three wheelers remained off the roads almost the entire day. Rail was blocked at various places including Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur and Balasore railway stations.
In the state capital Bhubaneswar NH16 was blocked by protesters. Offices of the Indian railways, PSUs and other organisations were also shut down. Colleges, schools, shops and business establishments remained closed.
The effect of Bharat Bandh was also seen at the state secretariat as the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik reached the State Secretariat around 11 am amid tight security. Since traffic was paralysed ministers and bureaucrats were seen arriving at the Secretariat on motor bikes and three wheelers.
