Odisha Urges Chhattisgarh to Stop Barrage Construction on Mahanadi; Centre Seeks Report

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Industries Minister Debi Prasad Mishra today urged the Chhattisgarh government to stop the construction work of barrage at upper catchment area of Mahanadi River. As the row escalated and the issue was raised by Biju Janata Dal (BJP) leader Bhatruhari Mahatab in Lok Sabha on Wednesday the Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti has already sought a report from the Chhattisgarh government on the proposed projects on the upstream of Mahanadi river over which the Odisha government has objections.

Reacting on the issue Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram said that the Mahanadi issue has been neglected by the State government and the people in the region will have to face problems because of the barrage construction.

The Congress party blamed the state government for not being able to assess the damage the state would face due to the construction of the barrage.
