Odisha: Hike in Taxes, Bus Operators threaten Strike

Bhubaneswar: After the breakdown of talks with the state government on the issue of raise in taxes from 70% to 100%, the bus owners association in Odisha has threatened to go on strike. According to sources, despite the transport minister’s assurance to reconsider the issue of taxes, the bus owners remain defiant and have decided to go ahead with the strike from December1, 2015.

The bus owners association opposes the hike in taxes as it will lead to the hike in bus fares eventually over-burdening the passengers. The association has demanded to roll back the hike completely or partially. They also demand that the City buses should not be allowed to operate on the national highways. On the contrary the state government through the transport minister has argued that taxes have not been raised since 2005, the minister also sought from the association sometime to reconsider since the decision has already been taken by the cabinet and cannot be overturned in his individual capacity, which the bus owners have refused.
