NCST Chairman says Kandhamal Incident Due to Failure of SOP

Bhubaneswar: After meeting the kin of the innocent tribals killed by security forces in Kandhamal the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) Chairman Dr Rameswar Oraon today said that the security personnel failed to follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) while conducting the anti-Maoist operation in Kandhamal district leading to the death of 6 innocent tribals. Oraon met the families of the deceased persons and talked with them for over three hours today.

Talking to media persons Oraon said that there was no prior intelligence input of Maoists moving in a vehicle. On the contrary, the security personnel had the information that the Maoists were moving on foot. So he raised a pertinent question that if the forces had prior information, then why did they open fire at the vehicle in which the tribals were moving? He also added that action would be taken against the security personnel who had opened fire at them.

The NCST chairman, who arrived in Kandhamal on Tuesday, said he will meet the State Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and the DGP in Bhubaneswar and will urge the government to take adequate measures so that such incidents do not recur.

Oraon is scheduled to meet the Chief Secretary Aditya Padhi, Director-General of Police KB Singh and Home Secretary Asit Tripathy in Bhubaneswar later today.
